Zinc anodes are popularly used as grounding cells, as well as in low resistance soils, where driving potential is not a major factor in a system design. Typical applications include buried pipelines, tanks and a number of other similar uses
Zinc soil anodes can be vertically or horizontally installed in native soils and should be wetted before burial.
SYNCOR can supply zinc anodes in a variety of dimensions and weights.
Backfield
Zinc anodes that are installed in soils require a prepared backfill around the anode for the following reasons:
·         To increase the effective surface area which lowers the anode-to-earth contact resistance.
·         Bentonite clay absorbs and retains moisture.
·         Gypsum provides a uniform, low resistance environment.
·         Sodium sulfate (a depolarizing agent) minimizes the pitting attack and oxide film formation.
Today, the standard backfill for magnesium and zinc consists of:
  • 75% Hydrated Gypsum (CuS04+2H20)
  • 20% Bentonite Clay
  • 5% Sodium Sulfate.
The backfill shall have a grain size distribution such that 100% of the material passes through a #20 mesh screen, and 50% of the material passes through a #100 mesh screen.
The backfill material shall be firmly packaged around the anode by means of vibration. The backfill material shall be of sufficient quantity to cover all zinc anode surfaces to a minimum thickness of 25mm.
The standard or pre-packaged anodes are connected with a 3meter copper wire 1X16 XLPE/PVC unless otherwise specified.
