Offshore Pipeline Cathodic Protection

Submarine pipelines installed under seawater and can be divided into the following categories: submarine pipelines, coastal pipelines, deep sea pipelines, oil, natural gas, seawater, freshwater, and sewage pipelines

The most suitable anode for protecting subsea pipelines is with bracelet anode.

Factors affecting the current demand in seawater are temperature, salinity, and ocean currents.

Bracelet anodes on subsea pipelines are usually arranged along the pipeline with a certain spacing. The standard material for bracelet anodes is aluminum-zinc-indium, also zinc anodes used under special conditions. Other method to protect a pipeline is sled standing near the pipeline and hold anodes. Sled connect to pipeline with cables.

The electrical connection between the pipe and the anode is carried out with a copper cable. The copper cable is heat welded between the core and the pipe. The cathodic protection of the pipe needs to provide sufficient current on the pipe surface, which can reduce the potential between the pipe and the electrode. 
In order to achieve better corrosion protection, a combination of cathodic protection and a suitable coating can be used on the surface of the pipe.

Design potential parameters .

Protection current density
The value of the protective current density is related to the type of seabed sediments, oxygen content, salinity and anions. The protection current density of steel.

Note: Pipelines operating with elevated temperatures (in excess of 50 °C) on the outside surface of the pipe require an adjustment to the design current density. Increasing water temperature decreases oxygen solubility. Increasing temperatures also accelerate the corrosion rate. The design current densities shall be increased by 1 mA/m2 for each degree Celsius of the metal/environment above 50 °C. Elevated temperatures can also reduce both anode and coating performances. For external pipe surface temperatures above 80 °C, a special assessment of current densities should be carried out.
